Ijaz Butt says PCB 'needn't give reason' for sacking Shahid Afridi as ODI skipper

Karachi : Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt has refused to give the reason behind the sacking of Shahid Afridi as the national team's One-Day International (ODI) skipper, saying that it is the board's right to change captains.

"Captains are changed all over the world and no cricket board gives a reason for that," The Express Tribune quoted Butt, as saying.

"We did what we thought was best and don't need to give a reason for it," he added.

The PCB chief also backed his decision to appoint Test captain Misbahul Haq, 37, as Afridi's successor, adding that lack of options in the squad forced the move.

"We're looking at everyone's performance and discipline, and we're trying to pinpoint a suitable candidate for the captain's position for the future," Butt added.

Afridi had been leading the Twenty20 and ODI sides since early 2010 before the PCB recently removed him as one-day captain for the forthcoming series against Ireland.

He had captained the team to the World Cup semi-finals, where they lost to India, and recently also guided them to a 3-2 win over the West Indies in the ODI series in the Caribbean. (ANI)
