US citizen arrested in Islamabad on ‘illegal stay’ charges

An American citizen has been arrested in Islamabad for staying illegally in Pakistan.

According to police sources, Matthew Craig- a US national- has been arrested from the federal capital under the Foreigners Act, Geo TV reports.

Craig had been living in the I-11 sector of Islamabad and his visa had expired.

The police arrested him after they received information that he was staying illegally in the country, and sources claim that he will be deported soon.

A nationwide crackdown was launched against foreign citizens living illegally in Pakistan in the aftermath of the Raymond Davis issue.

As part of this crackdown, a US national Aaron Mark DeHaven was arrested in Peshawar in February for overstaying his visa validity period.

The government has been concerned by the presence of foreign citizens in Pakistan, particularly following the January 27 shootings in Lahore by CIA operative Raymond Davis, in which two Pakistani men were killed. (ANI)
