Supreme Court orders secretary commerce, acting chairman NICL to present losses & recoveries record

Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered the Secretary Commerce and acting chairman of National Insurance Corporation Limited (NICL) to present the record of losses and recoveries made during next hearing of the case.

A three member bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry heard the NICL corruption here on Thursday.
Chief Justice in his remarks said robbery stays robbery whether it is of five rupees or of five Rs.50 million. He said we would bring the nation’ looted money back to the country and no more looting would be allowed. He said the return of former investigation of the NICL case Zafar Qureshi is one day issue but it has been made complex.
Court asked the concerned authorities to submit a report in next hearing about the appointment procedure of the former NICL chairman Ayaz Khan Niazi.
Court said if government wants proceedings against its three high officials then we are ready for this. We would issue orders against them and would see how court orders are not implemented.
Meanwhile, FIA Sindh Director Muazzam Jaah presented his report in the court which said that NICL land worth Rs.410 million has been returned, while cash worth Rs. 150 million has also been recovered. He said Federal Commerce Minister Amin Fahim’s wife has voluntarily deposited this money.
Chief justice in his remarks said that we respect women and would not say anything more; adding that whichever thing would be done it would be done by the FIA.
Court questioned the standing NICL Chairman Tariq Iqbal Puri to submit a report of recoveries and losses to the court. He informed the court that money worth Rs. 1.18 billion have been recovered so far.
Chief Justice said it is told in Audit report that NICL suffered Rs.18 billion loss.
Regarding the contempt of court proceedings against the three government officials, including secretary interior, secretary establishment and principal secretary to the prime
minister, Babar Awan appeared before the court and requested that principal secretary to the prime minister is on foreign visit and requested that the court might award time till hir return for submission of the reply.
Chief justice addressing attorney general and Babar Awan said that what has done the government regarding the court orders for return of Zaffar Qureshi.
Chief justice said is government want that the court might issue contempt of court notices to high government officials, adding that the government lawyers should inform the government for taking steps for the solution of the problem.
Chief justice said that the court should not be forced to go at extent where it should proceed against the government officials.
Chief Justice asked the Attorney General for not playing his role in the case and told him to inform the court about the government intention of returning the investigation officer Zafar Qureshi.
Meanwhile the court awarding time to submit the reply on the contempt of court notices the adjourned the further hearing of the case till the 29th of this month. SANA
