Government not to compromise Pakistan’s national interests : PM Gilani

ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday categorically stated that the government would  not compromise and undermine Pakistan’s national interests and integrity at any cost. “Pakistan Peoples Party is fully responsible for Pakistan’s sovereignty and security and would never undermine it,” Gilani told a large gathering here in the outskirts of Islamabad.
He said Pakistan’s relations with the United States were based on the basis of mutual self respect.“We will not go against the national interests,” the Prime Minister said while addressing a local gathering after the inauguration of an upgraded health centre here.
Prime Minister Gilani said the Pak-US diplomatic relations had experienced ups and downs during different government tenures, however assured that the present democratic government would always uphold the country’s interests at every cost.
He said it was the success of Pakistan Peoples Party government that it united the entire nation against extremists and terrorists, in a reference to the military operation in Swat and Malakand.
He said the country’s nuclear program was in safe hands and stressed “nobody should have any doubt about it.”
Gilani rejected the impression of “enemies of Pakistan” that the Inter Services Intelligence Agency (ISI) had ventured into any project without the government’s knowledge.
He said intelligence agencies were subservient to the government and were not involved in any act that was against the national interests.
“If ISI has taken some step, it has been done with our backing,” he said and added that “we do not want anyone to weaken our state institutions.”
Gilani also rejected the notion that Pakistan Peoples Party’s government was not honouring the judiciary. Even in the Raymond Davis issue, the Prime Minister said the government’s silence was due to its respect for the courts as the matter was sub judice.
He said the government always worked for strengthening of the state institutions.
“Whether judiciary, military and the parliament, we will not let anyone weaken the state institutions,” he said.
He said some leaders were trying to mislead the nation that the prime minister will have to face contempt of court after declining the proposal of parliamentary committee regarding judges.
“Such leaders should see now how the matter has been resolved amicably by the government,” he added.
He said the people fully knew about the worth of their political leaders and could now differentiate with those who tried to spread confusion and despondency.
“Those leaders who are interested in coming into the government through undemocratic means, should show some patience. The nation knows well their worth,” he said.
He rejected those unelected leaders who claimed that they could eradicate terrorism in three months if made prime minister. Gilani also dismissed the claim of a politician who believed that he enjoyed the backing of the country’s youth.
“It is my challenge that come into competition and see which party has the support of the youngsters. It is no doubt that it is Pakistan Peoples Party which enjoys such support,” he said.
The Prime Minister directed Interior Minister Rehman Malik to register votes free of cost of all 18-year-olds having the national identity cards, for the next general elections.
He mentioned that only in PPP, the leaders sacrificed for the cause while in other parties, the workers had to become the scapegoat.
He said the government had come into power with the support of people and would stay for five years. Gilani also mentioned the “wizards” on television talk shows who had large
claims for government’s fall.
“Had they been correct, I would have been out of job three years back,” he said. “Now understand that their assessments are wrong.”
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said Islamabad had an association with Shaheed Benazir Bhutto as both represented Pakistan and are a symbol of national unity and integrity.
Gilani, at the outset, directed that the bullet proof glass podium be removed as he did not want any thing between him and his workers. He paid rich tributes to the Shaheed leader and said she strove hard to strengthen the federation, the constitution, state institutions and the nation and the country.
Gilani said the government has undertaken unprecedented development work across the country in the past three years and said he was proud to have done it without any discrimination.
The inauguration of the upgraded health centre was attended by thousands of party workers, including a large number of women, from nearby areas, who continued to raise slogans of “Jeay Bhutto” and “Zinda hae BB, zinda hae” throughout the proceedings.
The event was attended by Information minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Law Minister Maula Bux Chandio, Leader of the House in Senate Nayyar Bukhari, Chairman Pakistan Baitul Maal Zamurrad Khan, Adviser to the PM on Law Farooq Awan.
Interior minister Rehman Malik addressing the gathering said the democratic government was bringing change in the lives of common man by providing them all basic facilities.
He said with a number of feathers in its cap, the government had not only overcome the menace of terrorism in Swat and other areas but was also upgrading facilities in underdeveloped areas.
He said the conspiracists would not succeed in their nefarious designs of harming the country as the country was safe under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani.
He said the government has set high benchmarks by undertaking unprecedented developmental work, that would be hard for any other government to beat in future.
Leader of House in the Senate Nayyar Bokhari said the rural and urban areas in Islamabad were gradually merging and there was a need for providing more facilities at the rural areas to ease pressure in the cities.
Adviser Farooq Awan and Chairman PBM Zamurrad Khan lauded the people friendly policies of the government and said all measures were being taken to provide health, education and job opportunities to the masses.
Zamurrad Khan also thanked the Prime Minister for inaugurating a local Baitul Maal Centre to cater for the poorest of the poor in the area.APP
