ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has sought
assurance from US for not intervening within the geographical boundaries
of Pakistan by ensuring the sovereignty of the country in future.
He
was talking to US Ambassador Cameron Munter, who called on him on
Friday. Situation arose after NATO attack, war against terror, stoppage
of NATO supplies and revival of Pak US relations came under discussion
during the meeting.
The Prime Minister said that US should give
guarantee to Pakistan that they would not cross the red lines as well as
respect the terms and condition laid down by Pakistan for extending
cooperation as frontline state in the terror-war. He said that both
Pakistan wants to take action against terrorists in collaboration with
US but respect of its sovereignty must be made certain at any cost. He
said that Pakistan would continue its support to the peace process in
Afghanistan. He demanded that the report of NATO attack’s probe should
be shared with Pakistan. “The protection of national sovereignty is the
top most priority of the government and no compromise would be made on
it. It was the democratic government of PPP which created consensus
among the whole nation on war on terror as wars could not be won without
the cooperation of the people”, he added.
On the occasion US
Ambassador Muter said that the improving the ties between both the
countries is the need of hour to overcome the terrorism thorough
coordinated efforts. He said that USA give high opinion to Pak US
relation and respect Pakistan’s sovereignty.
According to the
sources, the US Ambassador assured Gilani that in future such action
would be avoided in future due to the autonomy of Pakistan would hurt,
however Pakistan should reopen the NATO supplies.
The Prime
Minister made it clear to diplomat that any decision would be taken
after consultation and recommendation of the parliament regarding NATO
supplies.
Latter, the US Ambassador Munter told the media after a
function that to remove misunderstandings between Pakistan and US
armies is the biggest challenge. He said that the probe is underway
about NATO attack and Pakistan would be informed about its results. He
said that the relations of the both the countries were not in line
during 2011 but Pak US cooperation is imperative in the future.
“Once
we defeat terrorism, then the peace in Afghanistan as well as
governance and fiscal problems of Pakistan would ultimately be
