US should 'reset' relations with Pak to shape up "policies in Afghanistan": John Kerry

Islamabad : US Senator John Kerry has said that the death of Osama bin Laden has opened up "enormous opportunity" to reset America's relations with Pakistan that could help shape up "our policies in Afghanistan."

Although many in Congress have recently called for a re-evaluation of the alliance between the two countries, Kerry has a different view altogether.

"It's an opportunity for our relationship in Pakistan and an opportunity for our policies in Afghanistan. And obviously they are very, very linked," CBS News quoted Kerry said, as saying.

"The mission hasn't changed. The mission is the same - which is to disrupt al Qaeda and prevent them from using Afghanistan as a sanctuary," he added.

However, he suggested that the execution of that mission could be improved.

"Can we perform that mission more effectively? Can we do it in a way with less troops, with less footprint in Afghanistan?" he asked, adding "I see opportunity in all of this to sort of punch a reset button and frankly serve our interests and theirs much more effectively."

Meanwhile, US former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has also agreed that Washington should to maintain its relationships in Pakistan and surrounding countries. (ANI)
