16 killed as NATO oil tankers attacked

TORKHAM: Several NATO oil tankers bound for Afghanistan were set ablaze in two separate incidents in wee hours of Saturday, killing at least 16 people including 8 of same family.

In the first incident the tanker, transporting fuel to NATO forces in Afghanistan, was hit by a bomb at bypass road in Landi Kotal in the Khyber region. According to eyewitnesses, villagers from nearby houses rushed and started collecting oil coming out of the destroyed tanker after the fire had been extinguished. Suddenly the fire erupted again and at least 16 people including five young boys who had been collecting oil in their buckets were burnt to death. Later, security forces cordoned off the area.
Earlier, 11 other NATO supply vehicles, “most of them oil tankers” were destroyed in nearby Torkham town. The blast was apparently caused by a remote-controlled device planted under one of the vehicles.
On the other hand, Namaz-e-Janaza (Funeral Payer) of those who list their lives in incident was offered in the Landi Kotal and the deceased were laid to rest in native graveyard. The local administration has also suspended NATO supply from Pakistan to Afghanistan till further order because of security reason. Online
