Govt facing no threat; next elections to be held in 2013: PM Gilani

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that the government faces no threat from any issue and opposition should search other issue for politics and general elections would be held on time in 2013.


He said that government would not be affected from any issue, adding that why the eyes of all people fixed on presidency.
He was responding to questions by newsmen in Islamabad on Thursday after addressing the second Islamic Conference on General Responsive Policing.
He said that the appointment of the ambassador is done after the clearance of political leadership and not after the clearance of military.
The Prime Minister said the Government faces no threat from any scandal and those indulging in speculations would be disappointed.

Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said they believe in democracy and respect the mandate given by people of Pakistan to political parties. He said elections would be held in 2013 in a free, fair and transparent manner. He said no other Government can produce better results in the given circumstances and the kind of challenges confronting the nation.
 He said the present Government was carrying forward the democratic process in a positive manner in the most difficult situation. He said it is a matter of one year and those demanding elections should wait for them.
Asked about remarks of PML(N) leader that he saw Senate elections on time, the Prime Minister said he would appreciate positive response of Mian Nawaz Sharif about Senate elections and continuation of the political system.
To a question, the Prime Minister said investigations into Memo issue would be held at the highest level and these would be very fair. 
About resignation of former ambassador Hussain Haqqani, he said a controversy had begun on a national security issue and justice demanded fair investigations.  The ambassador was asked to resign to afford opportunity for fair investigations.

The Prime Minister said he had given commitment in the National Assembly that Hussain Haqqani would be summoned to explain his position.  He came and resigned after giving explanation to the leadership.
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that the Government was committed to empower women and create conditions essential for social and gender justice.
Prior to this addressing the second Islamic Conference on General Responsive Policing, Prime Minister said the Government believes in principles of equality as enshrined in the Constitution.
He said the Government recognizes and values women participation in public forces and therefore, committed to gender equality reforms.
The Prime Minister said the present Government has taken a number of steps reflecting its resolve for mainstreaming of women.  Twenty-seventh of December is celebrated as the national day of women to commemorate achievements of women and acknowledge their role in national progress.  Women are special focus of Benazir Income Support Programme which encompasses various initiatives for under-priviledged women including technical training, health insurance and interest free loans. The present demoratic government has also enacted laws for empowerment and protection of rights of women.

He said the quota of women in civil service has been increased from five to ten percent and its implementation is strictly being ensured. The Government has also delisted the First Women Bank from privatization list so that it continues to play its due role in economic empowerment of women.
The Prime Minister asked the Ministry of Interior and the police organizations to develop and implement adequate policies to combat violence against women along with engagement of other concerned ministries. 
He asked them take strategic steps to increase representation of women by fully implementing the women’s recruitment quota, invest in capacity building of women police, diversify women’s role in policing; and strengthen policing with procedures and protocols to adequately deal with crimes of violence against women.
