Auditor General of Pakistan Akhtar Buland Rana, called on the Prime Minister Syed Yusuf
Raza Gilani here on Tuesday during which the Prime Minister said that
the autonomy of the office of the Auditor General must be ensured, which
was critical to meet the imperatives of accountability and transparency
in the governance targeted to fight corruption.
The Prime Minister said that the Auditor General was accountable to the Parliament.
The Prime Minister said that it was for the first time in the history
of Pakistan that the autonomy has been given to the office of the
Auditor General enabling it to discharge its constitutional
responsibilities with freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.
Earlier, the Auditor General briefed the Prime Minister about the
working of the office and said that the office was the eyes and ears of
the Parliament and its autonomy was necessary to meet the demands of
audit and accounts separately. He thanked the Prime Minister for
providing support to the independent work. SANA
