Eight million water purification tablets sent to flood-hit Sindh province were counterfeit, a firm has informed Pakistan.
Floods in Sindh province have impacted over seven million people
with almost half a million people being accommodated in over 2,500
camps. As many as 1.3 million homes have been damaged and six million
acres of land inundated.
The Ireland-based manufacturer of water purification tablets in
Pakistan has told the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
that over eight million tablets sent to Sindh were "counterfeit" and
posed a "threat" to health, reported the daily Dawn.
The tablet disinfects contaminated water.
"The pills were never purchased from our company. Recent purchase of
over eight million Aquatabs by the NDMA were not from us or our
manufacturers," Dawn quoted the sole supplier of the tablet in Pakistan
as saying.
An official said: "We will definitely launch a probe into the matter if there is some problem regarding the drugs." IANS
