NA body unhappy with state-TV performance

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Thursday expressed its dissatisfaction over performance of the state-run TV.

The committee that met here in the building of Pakistan Television Corporation under Chairpersonship of Belum Hasnain, pointed out that despite huge resources and expenses the state-owned TV has failed to compete with the television in private sector.
The committee pointed out that despite the huge resources and generation of a lot of revenue the PTV also failed to prove itself as a well profitable organization.
Members of the committee also questioned quality of the human resources in the organization and criticized the poor language and incorrect words in Urdu language by some anchorpersons in PTV News.
Earlier, in his briefing to the committee MD PTV Yousaf Baig Mirza gave detailed presentation on functions of the network and the reforms that were recently carried out by the management.
He said that the network had incurred huge operational losses in 2008-09 that amounted to Rs930 million. In 2009-10 the losses lowered to Rs70 million and in 2010-11 roughly a profit of Rs70 million was achieved. He also briefed the committee on changes in service structure and increase in salaries besides regularization of over 400 job holders in the corporation. He also gave briefing over establishment of Medical Information System to decrease unnecessary claims and losses. However, the presentation never impressed the committee as they pointed out that the profit is not constant and losses are reported. The committee feared that if the situation persist and extra people are inducted to PTV then soon the corporation would meet the same fate as that of Pakistan Railways. Online
