Shahbaz Sharif approves Taunsa Hydro-Power Project, wind energy plan

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has given approval to the proposals regarding the agreements for 120 megawatt Taunsa Hydro-Power Project and mapping of wind power potential in Punjab.
He was presiding over a meeting of the Punjab Cabinet at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat here on Sunday.

The meeting also reviewed the law and order situation in the province and commended the performance of the police over successful operation against the criminals involved in heinous crimes in the Kacha area of Rajanpur and expressed gratitude to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for providing equipment and logistic support during the operation.

Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz said Pakistan was facing serious crisis of energy which was leaving negative impacts on all sectors, including agriculture, industry and trade besides affecting the process of investment. He said the Punjab government was working on various projects for generating energy through alternate sources and the Punjab Power Development Company had been set up in the province for this purpose. He said the plan of 120 megawatts hydro power project at Taunsa had been prepared and approved.

The chief minister said that during his visit to China, an agreement for the project would be signed with the Chinese company, China Water and Electric Corporation, and the same company would also carry out a survey about the mapping of wind power potential in the Punjab for generating energy through wind. He said the Punjab government would not have to provide any financial resources in this regard whereas the Chinese company would itself bear all the expenses for carrying out the survey. He said that keeping in view the data to be provided by the Chinese company, the provincial government would seek cooperation of companies of other countries in the projects of generating energy through wind.

Shahbaz said the maintenance of law and order and protection of life and property of the people was the responsibility of the government and all resources were being utilised for the purpose. He stressed that the law-enforcement agencies should make intelligence system more effective and exchange information with each other to ensure timely action against anti-social elements. He said a system would be evolved for checking of all important places, including inns, hotels and guest houses, and if any police official would show negligence in this regard, strict action should be taken against him.

He directed that a plan should be formulated for inducting new blood in the police force and the IGP and the home secretary should submit their recommendations in this regard.

Earlier, Chief Secretary Nasir Mehmood Khosa gave a briefing on the energy projects in the province.

Secretary Irrigation Rab Nawaz Khan highlighted important aspects of Taunsa Hydro-Power Project and wind power projects.
