ISLAMABAD: The dissident PPP leaders, Senator Safdar Abbasi and Naheed Khan have asked their party command to engage three surviving senior jurists who were associates in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto case in the late 70s.
“The panel of three—Abdul Hafiz Lakho, Abdul Sattar and Afzal Siddiqui—who had important role in the ZAB case, must be brought on board in the presidential reference being heard by the Supreme Court of Pakistan,” says the couple.
Senator Safdar Abbasi emphasised that these advocates would better raise law points as they carry not only experience but share memories about the ZAB case.
The advocates panel, he said, would not only highlight law points but also the difficulties they and the senior jurists, representing ZAB, faced. “We, the PPP, must ensure that no lacuna exists.”
Abdul Hafeez Lakho was on panel of advocates of ZAB to fight his legal case in the Supreme Court. Former Advocate General, Punjab, Mian Abdul Sattar Najam, Assistant Advocate General at that time, and Afzal Siddiqui had close association with the case.
These lawyers, juniors at that time, have been engaged in the process in their respective capacities, such as advocate general and therefore their services must be obtained.
To a question, Abbasi said that Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan could also be part of the panel instead of leaving all things in one hand. “We need to bring facts before the people and the courts on legal and constitutional grounds.”
“The people of Pakistan and the history have already exonerated Shaheed Bhutto from the unfounded charges on which his judicial murder was committed; therefore, we need not correct history but to tell the nation about the facts,” he added.
The three senior advocates, he maintained, are the only source of provision of correct information and expose those remaining parts of the conspiracy under which ZAB was murdered.
Safdar Abbasi had reservations about Babar Awan being alone to handle the case of a man who enjoyed international reputation and highest degree of respect while serving the nation and protecting the Muslims throughout the World.
The senator’s wife, Naheed Khan, Political Secretary to assassinated Benazir Bhutto, had similar views while adding that the government must expose the murderers of Mohtarma while continuing on with the ZAB case.
“History would never forgive us if we do not track down and tell the people about the murderers of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s vote bank brought present party leadership into power.”
