Dr Asim Hussain elected senator unopposed

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari’s close aide Dr Asim Hussain on Saturday was declared as Senator unopposed on a general seat.

The Provincial Election Commissioner/Returning Officer for the Senate by-election, Sono Khan Baloch, announced this after conducting scrutiny of nomination papers at his office.

Dr Asim Hussain was accompanied by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali, Provincial Ministers and MPAs, Pir Mazharul Haq, Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, Deputy Speaker Sindh Assembly Shehla Raza, Agha Siraj Durrani, Engineer Rafique, Sharjeel Inam Memon, Akhtar Jadoon, Muzaffar Shujra, Saleem Hingoro, Shama Mithiani, Nadeem Bhutto, Najma Saeed and Farzana Baloch. The general seat of the Senate had fallen vacant due to the resignation of Dr Khatu Mal Jeewan and the nomination papers were filed against that seat by only one candidate, Dr Asim Hussain s/o Dr Tajamul Hussain. He was nominated by the PPPP. His term would expire on March 11 2015, said Sono Khan Baloch.

In his brief chat with the media, Dr Asim said the people should be given relief as the PPP was elected to provide them relief. He said it would be up to the leadership of the PPP to allot or not to give him any ministry.

Sindh Chief minister Qaim Ali Shah said Dr Asim was elected unopposed as Senator, which reflected the good selection of the PPP leadership. He said Asim was a professional who had also performed well in different sectors.
