Mexican soldiers rescue 52 abducted migrants

Mexico City : Mexican soldiers rescued 52 migrants from Central America being held hostage at a home in the northeastern border state of Tamaulipas, defence secretariat said.

The soldiers found the hostages in Victoria, the state capital, on Thursday after receiving a tip, the statement read Friday.

Among the hostages, 34 were from Honduras, 12 from Guatemala, five from El Salvador and one from Nicaragua.

The migrants were likely heading north to attempt to cross illegally into the United States.

The bodies of 183 people were recovered earlier this month from mass graves near the Tamaulipas municipality of San Fernando, the same place where a group of 72 migrants from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador and Brazil were slaughtered in August 2010.

Abductions are hardly new in Tamaulipas: police on Tuesday rescued 51 people being held hostage in the town of Reynosa, across the border from McAllen, Texas. AFP/PTI
