Britain urges Pakistan, India build on recent tentative steps to better ties

Islamabad : Visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron Tuesday urged Pakistan and India to build on recent, tentative steps toward better relations, saying "time was now ripe for both nations to put their history of war and mistrust behind them."

Cameron - on his first trip to Pakistan as Premier called for two countries to make a "fresh start" intheir relations. He said UK wanted strong ties between India and Pakistan. In speech at a university here, he lauded recent meeting between Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and Indian Premier Manmohan Singh in Mohali at cricket World Cup fixture between two countries. "The sight of Prime Minister Gilani and Prime Minister Singh sitting together at last week's cricket World Cup is tremendous sign of hope for the future," he said. "I believe the time is ripe for your countries to look even further beyond what divides you and embrace what unites you."
