Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has decided not to file an appeal against his conviction in the contempt of court case.
Talking to media, counsel of the Prime Minister Aitzaz Ahsan said the decision of not challenging the conviction has been taken following Speaker National Assembly’s ruling of not sending the disqualification reference against the Prime Minister to the Election Commission.
To a question, Aitzaz Ahsan said the Election Commission has no role whatsoever following the Speaker’s ruling on the matter.
In her ruling on Thursday, the speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza had declared that there was no question of disqualification of the Prime Minister as no specific charge against him regarding the propagation of any opinion or acting in any manner against the independence of the judiciary has been framed by the apex court.
Meanwhile, addressing a news conference in Lahore, Aitzaz Ahsan said that the decision of not filing appeal has been taken unanimously by Pakistan Peoples Party after consultation with the top leadership.
Describing the ruling of the Speaker on the matter as the right one, he said the apex court in its decision has also not disqualified the Prime Minister. Moreover the office of the Speaker is not a post office.
