BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – A man accused of setting a clothing store on
fire and killing six women during an attempted robbery last year has
pleaded guilty.
Renaldo Anderson Alleyne, 21,
pleaded guilty on Wednesday to six counts of manslaughter. Police had
originally charged him with murder.
It is unclear when he will be sentenced. Prosecutors are awaiting a psychological assessment.
Pathologists
testified that the women, ages 18 to 24, died from asphyxiation because
of smoke inhalation. Police have said they became trapped when they ran
to the back of the store to escape the fire set in September 2010.
Three of the women were employees at the Campus Trendz Boutique in the capital of Bridgetown. The other three were customers.
A second suspect, Jamar Bynoe, is facing similar charges but the case has not yet gone to trial. AP
