The sources said the militants had fled Mohmand Agency and were trying to enter Matta tehsil of Swat district after passing through Bajaur Agency and Dir district when intercepted by the forces in Dherai village.

The security forces, the sources said, signalled militants to stop but instead they opened fire, injuring two soldiers. The security forces killed seven militants in the retaliatory fire. The slain militants were identified as Alam, Sherzada, Abdur Rahman, Saleh Rahman, Fazal Sawab, Faqir Jan and Shamsul Hadi. The security forces recovered six machineguns, eight hand grenades and hundreds of rounds from them.
