Karachi traders keep markets closed to protest against ‘extortionist mafia’

Karachi : On the call of All Karachi Traders Alliance Association (AKTAA) Karachi traders on Tuesday closed markets and shops to register their protest against the growing lawlessness,kidnappings for ransom and threats of extortionists.All markets and shops in Saddar,
Jamshed, Liaquatabad, Malir and other towns remained completely shut.It may be noted that on Monday a meeting of Karachi traders was held in the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in which representatives of small traders had resolved that they would keep the markets closed on Tuesday. However, the leader of Business Group Qasim Teli had announced that traders would hold a peaceful protest demo on 5th April from 03:00 pm to 07:00 pm at Polo Ground against worsening law and order situation in Karachi. He had warned that the traders of Karachi would go on strike for infinite period from 12th April 2011, if the government failed to meet their demands.Atiq Mir of All Karachi Traders Alliance told PPI that the small traders of Karachi have shown their resolve and unity against the ‘extortionist mafia’. Regretting that government has failed to provide security to traders, he demanded to take action firm against extortionist mafia.  He warned that the traders of Karachi would begin a ‘civil disobedient campaign’, if the government failed to provide protection to them.
