Karachi : Pakistan Navy’s Frigate PNS Alamgir arrived Thursday at Turkish Golcuk Naval Base on three-day visit to carry out harbour and sea exercises with Navy of Turkey, a PN press releasesaid.
An Oliver Hazard Perry Class Frigate, commissioned in Pakistan Navy on August 31 2010 at Naval StationMayport, Florida, it will enhance Pakistan’s capability to provide maritime security in North Arabian and adjoining seas. It is now on passage to Pakistan from United States and scheduled to visit ports of friendly countries.
Pakistan Navy is actively involved in maintaining peace and stability in the region - from Gulf of Aden to Gulf of Oman including North Arabian Sea and its ships vigorously operating and participating in all peace keeping missions. In support of UN resolutions, Pakistan, along with other regional and extra regional Navies is helping to deal with menace of pirates in Gulf of Aden and along Somali coast.Continuous presence of Pakistani ships in busiest sea lanes helped continuous flow of shipping and uninterrupted economic activities. These sea routes connect oil rich Middle Eastern states to industrialized Western world.In support of Pakistan Government’s policies against piracy and maritime terrorism, PNS Alamgir will mainly be deployed for coalition patrols and anti-piracy operations. It is suitably equipped for conducting Maritime Security Operations, which has become primary task of navies in many parts of the world. With its weapons, sensors, the ship will not only be most suitable platform for any kind of benign role, but also enhance defensive capability of Pakistan against any aggression.PNS Alamgir is 453 feet in length, displaces 4100 tons, propelled by two gas turbines engines and cando sustained speeds of 30knots plus, well-equipped for Anti-Submarine Warfare. Its 76mm fully automatic gun is capable of shooting both air and surface targets, can carry 2 helicopters for multiple tasks. Its large radius of action makes it very suitable platform for sustained maritime operations away from home port.PPI
