Islamabad : Almost 85% Pakistanis feel that children should respect and love their parents irrespective of how good or bad they are in person.
Among the remaining, only 13% believe thatchildren are not under an obligation to obey and respect parents whose own behavior, habits and attitudes are questionable, showed the result of a survey conducted by Gilani Research Foundation/Gallup Pakistan. In a survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked toagree with one of the following two statements. The first was ‘Children should love and respect their respect their parents despite their positive and negative attributes’ and the second was ‘Children arenot under any obligation to obey and respect parents whose behavior and attitude they don’t approve of.’ Results show that 85% respondents agreed with the first statement while only 13% agreed with the second one. 1% said they did not know and 1% did not respond.A detailed analysis of the survey shows that as compared to urban residents, a slightly higher percentage of rural respondents believe that parents should be given unconditional love and respect. There appears to be no significant difference of opinion in this regard across other demographic categories. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2713 men and women in rural and urban areas of allfour provinces of the country, during March 2011. Error margin is estimated to be approximately + 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level. PPI
