SC suspends Rehman Malik’s Senate membership in dual nationality case

The Supreme Court of Pakistan rejecting the documents produced before the bench hassuspended Senate membership of Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik in dual nationality case.

A three member bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the dual nationality case and announced its interim order on Monday.
The apex court took the decision under Article 63-A of the Constitution after the minister failed to provide testimonials in favor of his claim regarding abandonment of British nationality.
The court orders are being ridiculed… Why required documents were not submitted to the court,” Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry observed in an interim order.
Malik had claimed that he had forfeited his British citizenship but failed to provide sufficient documents to the SC.
During the hearing, the bench said that the membership has been suspended since interior minister Rehman Malik failed to provide documents subjected to his abandonment of UK citizenship.
The bench further stated that the senate membership of Rehman Malik will remain suspended till the final verdict in the case.
Rehman Malik will not be able to hold the post of Interior Minister till the suspension of his membership.
The SC had also suspended the National Assembly membership of PPP MNA Farahnaz Ispahani in the same case earlier.
Apart from Farahnaz Ispahani and Rehman Malik, a new petition submitted on Monday also names fourteen other parliamentarians and MPAs holding dual nationalities.
The Supreme Court also issued notices to fourteen other parliamentarians including Hafeez Sheikh, Sabir Baloch, Nadia Gabol and Khawaja Asif for holding dual nationality. SANA
