ISLAMABAD: On the requisition of opposition parties, both houses of
parliament would meet today (Thursday) for a session which is likely to
witness heated debates particularly with regards to the raging violence
in Karachi.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had jointly submitted the requisition
for calling sessions of the national assembly and Senate to discuss a
range of issues, with the Karachi law and order situation being at the
top of the agenda.
Alleged government failure to implement
Supreme Court orders and alleged “massive rigging” in Azad Kashmir
elections last month would also be debated in the upper and lower
houses of the Parliament.
During the sessions, the government
is expected to face a tough time from the opposition, which is getting
ready to lodge a strong protest over the recent incidents of target
killing in Karachi and alleged rigging in the AJK polls.
The
MQM has also declared that it will lodge a strong protest over the
government’s move to restore the commissionerate system in Sindh. On
this issue, however, the MQM will be alone in both the houses as all
other parties, including the PML-N, are in support of the revival of
the system.
On Thursday last week, National Assembly Speaker Dr
Fehmida Mirza summoned the session of the National Assembly in exercise
of powers conferred upon her by clause (3) of Article 54 of the
constitution.
On the other hand, Senate Chairman Farooq H Naek
summoned the session of the Senate in exercise of powers by clause 3 of
article 54 read with Article 61 of the constitution. Online
